It was a wellness guru on instagram that first brought my attention to My Morning Jacket. The discovery came during a mountainous stressful situation during the pandemic that will not be named. The woman on the screen told me that if I did this heart opening exercise then everything would be better. I tried it, and although it did not work as she said it would, I did discover the solace sounds of MMJ. The Waterfall and The Waterfall II became a loud anthem through the hectic and heartbreaking rules of divorce. This review is not for either of those albums, but for the surly and tender songs of Evil Urges. Let’s go into this cold:
Within seconds of hearing the opening of Evil Urges, it felt like home. The warm and wailing guitar becomes the rope wrapped around you, the pressure of it bringing a feeling of safety and knowing. Aluminum Park, being my favorite track, rings out clear and versatile with its punchy riff. This is a song that you didn’t know would end up your favorite. Remnants can’t help but bring up thoughts about the current news on Arcade Fire and it’s own empire, teetering on sandy shores. Following is Smokin’ for Shootin’ the melancholy finish to a perfect three song order. The trepidation introduced in the beginning of the song is all but quelled by the solo which brings hope and longing to finish. The album sounds as if it is an infinity loop. That is what I love about it. Any song could be the first song, and bring you to the same feeling. Everything is broken, but everything is ok.
