dressed like a Priest: Cowards
It is often difficult for me to find modern music that I connect with in a cerebral way. dressed like a Priest does this and more.
I first heard dressed like a Priest while I was pregnant with my third child. wallaby left me in tears. This song in particular is my favorite on the album, and I think it is accessing a memory that I cannot cognitively remember. I know it is a good memory, because I feel nostalgic but happy while listening to this song. The melody that pulls through this song is heartfelt and memorable.
places opens the album, introducing fuzzy guitar layers that sound fresh and new in 2025. The verses remind me of early Bon Iver in a way. The song explores the awkward sorrow that comes to us when returning to places that were once shared by ex lovers/friends/family.
moss moves us through a weird proggy soundscape, one of miscommunication and anger. This song feels much like a grief process and how it is not linear, and possesses no beginning or end.
In cover he explains how he has been stripped of all his cares. The song sounds like an industrial construction site, and reminds me of a ballet I once saw as a young girl. The dancers moved not to actual music, but the sounds of jackhammers and drone noise. cover is losing ones way, and moving through the journey of returning to self.
lain is a beautiful instrumental track that feels like it is continuing that hard journey of self discovery. As if you have been dealt a bad hand, but decide to press on despite your circumstance.
The river is definitely the most eclectic song on the album. With an intense doom inspired chorus, we are left wondering where the fuck this came from. This song inspires the question of how did we end up here?
The last song on the album is goodbye. Well placed and reminds us that the end of something could quite possibly be just another beginning.
